René Becker, co-owner of Shepard, is also the founder and owner of the Hi-Rise Bread Co., an award-winning bakery and cafe, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Before opening the Hi-Rise in 1996, Becker was a journalist and wrote for various publications including Boston Magazine, where he was Senior Writer and restaurant critic.

Susan Regis, co-owner of Shepard, began her cooking career at Seasons in the Bostonian Hotel, a restaurant that launched the careers of many of Boston’s most famous chefs, including Lydia Shire and Jody Adams. With Shire, Regis opened several other restaurants, most notably Biba. Regis also was chef at Upstairs on the Square in Cambridge, where she was named "Best Chef—Northeast" by the James Beard Foundation.

Peter McKenzie moved to Cambridge to work for Jody Adams at Rialto from Washington DC, where he worked with R.J. Cooper at Vidalia restaurant. After spending a brief season on Nantucket at Straight Wharf Restaurant (where he met his future wife and pastry chef Mareena), Peter returned to Rialto as their sous chef. He then joined Mareena at Ribelle restaurant in Brookline where together they ran the kitchen as chef de cuisine and pastry chef. Peter joined the Shepard team in early 2015 and helped to open the restaurant as its chef de cuisine.
